These muffins are always the first ones to disappear in our house. They’re my family’s favorite wholesome muffin recipe and they are so easy to make!

My toddler has been wanting to help me more in the kitchen, so I though it would be a fun idea to have her help me make these muffins. Plus, it was a good excuse to use up the blueberries sitting in the fridge.

Her official job is stirring the batter, which she loves to do. Sometimes things can get a little messy, but that’s part of the muffin-making adventure, right?

Eventually, we managed to get the muffin batter into the oven without too much chaos. Safe!

Why You’ll Love These Blueberry Muffins

Made with wholesome ingredients. They’re made with simple ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. Whole wheat flour, eggs, butter (or coconut oil), ground cinnamon, Greek yogurt, and pure maple syrup.

Naturally sweetened. Instead of using refined sugar, these blueberry muffins are naturally sweetened with fresh blueberries that add little bursts of fruity flavor along with a touch of pure maple syrup.

Easy to make and family-friendly. You don’t need any fancy equipment or mixer to make these delicious muffins. Just stir the ingredients together, fold in the blueberries, and bake them in the oven.

Great for meal prep. These muffins are quick to make so you can bake a batch ahead for busy mornings, lunchboxes, or afternoon snack. They’re freezer-friendly too.

Soft, fluffy, and moist. The Greek yogurt in these healthy blueberry muffins give them a tender crumb and helps keep them moist.

Ingredients for healthy blueberry muffin

Whole wheat flour: I use 100% whole wheat flour in this recipe. It adds a delicious hearty flavor and wholesome texture to these muffins.

Baking powder and baking soda: These are leavening agents that help the muffins rise, which makes them light and fluffy. It’s important to make sure your baking powder and baking soda are fresh to ensure a proper rise.

Salt: This helps balance the sweetness and enhances the flavor of the other ingredients.

Cinnamon: This adds a warm and cozy flavor that balances with the juicy blueberries.

Greek yogurt: This helps keep the muffins moist and adds a boost of protein. I usually use 0% plain yogurt. You can use sour cream if you prefer.

Maple syrup: This helps to naturally sweeten the muffins without adding refined sugar. Use pure maple syrup, not table syrup.

Milk: This adds moisture to the muffins. I use 2% milk. You can use cow’s milk or dairy-free milk, if desired.

Eggs: This helps make the muffins moist and binds the ingredients together.

Butter: You can use melted coconut oil or unsalted butter for this recipe. I usually use butter because it gives it better flavor.

Vanilla extract: This gives the muffins good flavor.

Blueberries: This adds juicy bursts of sweetness in every bite. You can use fresh or frozen blueberries. If using frozen, do not thaw.

Streusel topping: This is optional and contains a little brown sugar, but it gives these healthy muffins that classic bakery-style touch.

Fresh vs. Frozen Blueberries

Both fresh and frozen blueberries work well in these muffins. The main difference is how they affect the appearance and texture of your muffins.

Fresh blueberries hold their shape when baking. Rinse them in cool water, then thoroughly pat them dry. I like to toss them in a little flour before folding them into the batter so they don’t sink to the bottom.

Frozen blueberries are great to use year-round, especially if fresh ones are not in season. Add them straight from the freezer (do not thaw). This helps prevents excess moisture from the frozen blueberries from making the batter too wet.

Frozen blueberries will release some color as you fold them into the batter, which will give your muffins a slightly blue or purplish tint.

My favorite frozen blueberries to use are wild blueberries because they are smaller than regular blueberries and packed with antioxidants.

How to make healthy blueberry muffins

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly grease a 12-cup standard muffin tin with butter or nonstick spray.

In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon together.

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, Greek yogurt (or sour cream if using), milk, pure maple syrup, melted butter (or coconut oil if using), and vanilla extract until well combined.

Pour the dry ingredients into the bowl with the wet ingredients and stir just until combined. DO NOT OVERMIX.

In a medium bowl, toss the blueberries with 1 tablespoon of flour. Use a spatula to gently fold in the fresh or frozen blueberries. Scoop the batter into the prepared muffin tin, filling them all the way to the top.

Make the streusel topping (optional step): In a small bowl, whisk the flour, rolled oats, chopped pecans, ground cinnamon, brown sugar, a pinch of salt together. Add the melted butter and use a fork to combine the ingredients just until moistened and crumbly.

Sprinkle the streusel topping over the top of the muffins. If you’re not using the streusel topping, you can sprinkle the top of the muffins evenly with coarse sugar if desired.

Bake for 5 minutes at 425°F, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (without opening the oven door). Bake for an additional 13-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. These muffins should take about 18-20 minutes in total to bake. Let them cool for 5 minutes in the pan before enjoying. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before storing.

If using frozen blueberries, you may need to bake for a few extra minutes because the cold berries lower the overall temperature of the batter.

How to make blueberry muffins without refined sugar

It’s easy to make delicious blueberry muffins without using white sugar. These muffins are naturally sweetened with fresh blueberries and pure maple syrup. They add just enough sweetness while keeping the muffins moist and tender.

Tips for making moist and fluffy blueberry muffins

Don’t overmix the batter. To achieve fluffy muffins, it’s important tomix the wet and dry ingredients just until combined.Just enough until you no longer see dry clumps of flour.

Overmixing the batter develops too much gluten, which makes the muffins tough and dense.

Use Greek yogurt or sour cream for moisture. This makes the muffins extra tender without having to add extra oil or butter.

Use room temperature ingredients if possible. Let the egg, milk, and Greek yogurt come to room temperature before mixing. This helps the ingredients mix more easily and avoid uneven textures or gummy centers.

Measure the flour correctly. Adding too much flour is the most common reason why muffins turn out dry or heavy. For the best results, I recommend using a kitchen scale. This is how I test all my recipes to ensure consistent and delicious muffins.

If measuring with cups, gently spoon the sifted flour into the measuring cup and level it off with a knife. Do not use the measuring cup to scoop directly from the bag.

Avoid overbaking. Everyone’s ovens are slightly different. I test all my recipes in my Breville Smart Oven. Use a toothpick to start checking for doneness a few minutes before the recipe’s suggesting baking time.

If you’re using frozen blueberries, they will take a few extra minutes for the muffins to bake.

How to keep blueberries from sinking in muffins

healthy blueberry muffins

Toss the blueberries in flour. If you find that your fruit tends to sink to the bottom when making muffins or quick breads, toss them in a little flour before folding the blueberries into the batter.

The flour lightly coats the blueberries and helps prevent them from sinking to the bottom.

Save a few blueberries to add on top. To give these muffins that bakery-style look, press a few extra blueberries onto the surface of each muffin just before baking.

How to store these blueberry muffins

Can you freeze blueberry muffins? Yes, these muffins freeze beautifully. Simply wrap the cooled muffins individually in plastic wrap and store in a freezer-safe bag or container.

Or you can place the cooled muffins in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for 1-2 hours until solid. Then transfer the frozen muffins to a freezer-safe bag or container.

Remove as much excess air as possible to prevent freezer burn. Muffins can be frozen for 2 to 3 months.

How to reheat blueberry muffins?

Thaw frozen muffins at room temperature for 1-2 hours or overnight in the fridge.

To warm up the muffin, heat in the microwave for 20-30 seconds.

How long do blueberry muffins last?

Store at room temperature: Keep these muffins in an airtight container for up to 2-4 days. Line the container with paper towel to absorb excess moisture.

Store in the fridge: Keep cooled muffins stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Store in the freezer: Keep cooled muffins stored in the freezer in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 2-3 months.
