Ground turkey can be pretty bland, but when you dress it up with these beautiful Mediterranean flavors, you’ll get an incredible grilled turkey burger that you’ll reach for again and again.

Since I stopped eating beef burgers over 10 years ago, I’ve been trying to find a good alternative that both my husband and I can get behind. THIS Mediterranean turkey burger is it!

My husband said that this is the tastiest burger that he’s ever had. It’s juicy, tender, and the opposite of bland. The turkey burger patty is also gluten-free and egg-free because it’s made without bread crumbs or eggs.

Ground turkey: I use extra lean ground turkey for this burger recipe. It’s the easiest one to find at my local grocery store.

Turkey is lower in calories and saturated fat than beef, so it can be a better choice for heart health.

Red onion: This gives the burger good flavor, texture, and adds moisture.

Sun-dried tomatoes: I use sun-dried tomatoes in oil, which have a sweet and slightly tangy flavor.

If you don’t like sun-dried tomatoes, you can substitute with ¼ cup chopped kalamata olives for a salty taste.

Mint: I use fresh mint leaves in this recipe which gives the burger a cool and refreshing flavor. Sun-dried tomatoes, mint and feta cheese go well together.

If you don’t like mint, you can substitute with chopped cilantro, parsley, or baby spinach.

Garlic: Fresh garlic adds good flavor to these burgers. Use fresh garlic instead of garlic powder.

Spices: I use dried oregano, ground cumin, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes in this turkey burger recipe.

If you don’t like cumin, substitute with more dried oregano. If you’re sensitive to heat, leave out the red pepper flakes.

Feta cheese: This adds a salty and tangy flavor to the burger.

How to make and cook turkey burgers

Make the cucumber yogurt sauce: In a small bowl, combine the yogurt, cucumber, lemon juice and zest (if using), garlic powder, salt, and fresh chopped dill. Stir everything together until well combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Make the turkey burger patties: In a large mixing bowl, add the ground turkey, red onion, sun-dried tomatoes, mint, garlic, oregano, cumin, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and feta cheese.

Mix until everything is thoroughly combined. Use your hands to form 4 evenly sized burger patties. They should be slightly larger than your hamburger bun as they will shrink when cooking.

Cook the burgers: Preheat grill or heat a large skillet over medium heat. If you’re using a skillet, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil or lightly spray with cooking oil.

When the grill or skillet is hot, add the patties and cook for 3-5 minutes on each side, or until internal temperature registers 165°F.

Serve and enjoy: To serve, slather some of the cucumber yogurt sauce on a bun. Add the turkey burger, some sliced cucumber, sliced tomato, sliced red onion, and arugula. Enjoy!

Ingredients

Units Scale

Cucmber Yogurt Sauce For Burgers:

  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (0% or 2% works great)

  • 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

Turkey Burger Patties:

  • 1 lb. ground turkey (I use extra-lean ground turkey)

  • 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/3 cup feta cheese, crumbled

For Serving:

  • 4 hamburger buns (optional)
  • 1/2 English cucumber, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • Sliced tomato
  • Lettuce, baby spinach, or arugula

Instructions

  1. Make the cucumber yogurt sauce for the burgers: In a small mixing bowl, add the yogurt, cucumber, lemon juice and zest (if using), garlic powder, salt, and chopped dill. Stir everything together until well combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Make the turkey burger patties: In a large mixing bowl, add the ground turkey, red onion, sun-dried tomatoes, mint, garlic, dried oregano, ground cumin, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes (if using), and feta cheese.
  3. Mix until everything is just combined. Avoid overworking the mixture, otherwise this can create tough and dense burgers.
  4. Use your hands to form 4 or 5 evenly sized burger patties. They should be a little larger than your hamburger bun as they will shrink slightly when cooking.
  5. Cook the turkey burgers: Preheat grill or heat a large skillet over medium heat. If you’re using a skillet, add 2 tablespoons of oilve oil or lightly spray with cooking oil. When the grill or skillet is hot, add the patties and cook for 3-5 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reads 165°F.
  6. Serve and enjoy: To serve, slather some of the cucumber sauce on a toasted bun (if using), add the lettuce, turkey burger, sliced tomato, sliced cucumber, and sliced red onion. Enjoy!

Notes

  1. Keep it gluten-free by using a gluten-free hamburger bun or serving it without the bun.
  2. Turkey substitute: If you don’t like turkey, use extra-lean ground chicken instead.
  3. Mint substitute: If you don’t like mint, use fresh chopped parsley, cilantro, or baby spinach instead.
  4. Sun-dried tomatoes substitute: If you don’t like sun-dried tomatoes, use chopped kalamata olives instead.
  5. Nutrition information is a rough estimate based on 4 equal sized hamburgers without the bun and using 0% Greek yogurt.
