What fruit looks best in a rainbow platter?
The best fruits for a vibrant and colorful fruit platter include red strawberries or raspberries, orange cantaloupe or clementines, yellow pineapple or mangoes, green grapes or kiwi, blue blueberries, purple grapes or blackberries.
You’ll want to carefully arrange them in the ROYGBIV order, starting with red on the outside, followed by orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
For the clouds, you can use cheese (such as Babybel), a healthy yogurt dip, mini marshmallows, or little meringues.

How to build this rainbow fruit platter
Select a large round board to display the fruit. Start with the red fruits by forming them on the outer edge of the rainbow arch.
Then arrange the orange fruits in a row just below the red fruits. Then arrange the yellow fruits in a line below the orange fruits.
Then arrange the green fruits in a row underneath the yellow fruits. Then arrange the blue fruits below the green fruits.
Then arrange the purple fruits in a curve below the blue fruits. Each row will curve according to the rainbow arch shape and become smaller to mimic the rainbow colors.
At the base of each side of the rainbow, you can add your clouds. This can be a yogurt dip, Babybel cheese, mini marshmallows, or little meringues.
If you’re doing a St. Patrick’s Day theme, you can add gold foiled candy, such as gold chocolate coins to mimic a pot of gold.
If you’re using a rectangular board, add the cloud options on the two opposite corners of the board (as shown in the photo above).
Then start by arranging the yellow fruits in a row in the middle, connecting the two clouds together.
Then arrange the orange fruits in a row above the yellow fruits, and the green fruits below the yellow fruits.
Then add the blue fruits in a row below the green fruits, and the purple fruits to fill out the corner below the blue fruits.
Finally, arrange the red fruits to fill out the opposite corner above the orange fruits.
Is it cheaper to buy a fruit tray or make your own?
It is significantly cheaper to make your own fruit tray than buying a pre-made one.
Homemade fruit platters allow you to choose your preferred selection of fruit and opt for fresher produce.
You’ll avoid the high mark up on pre-made platters and create a better-quality fruit tray for less money.
To make this fruit platter, it cost me around $20 Canadian dollars (about $14.65 USD).
Below are some ways you can keep the costs low when creating your own rainbow fruit platter:
- Buy fruits that are in season.
- Buy fruits that are on sale.
- Choose the most affordable fruits to represent each rainbow color.

Can I prepare a fruit platter the night before?
Yes, you can prepare a fruit platter the night before. Because fruit starts to release moisture and soften after cutting it up, I recommend preparing this no more than 24 hours in advance.
Keep the fruit stored in the fridge in separate airtight containers to prevent the flavors and colors from mingling.
If you’re using fruits like apples, pears, or bananas, or peaches, I recommend cutting them right before serving to prevent them from turning brown.
You can add a squeeze lemon juice on the fruit to keep it fresh if desired.
